Dubrovnik Riviera & Islands
Central Dalmatias sweeping coastline beguiles visitors, with a dramatic, rocky mountain ridge screening beautiful beaches and lush vegetation from the mainland.
Dubrovnik, or Ragusa as it was formerly known, has always looked seawards. Its sea-faring prowess was such that the profits built a cultured city of splendour. Running from the Old Harbour to the Pile Gate is the Stradun, the limestone-flagged main thoroughfare. Burnished bright by centuries of feet, narrow, stepped alleyways ascend from here to the city walls. Over the centuries, Dubrovnik has shown a remarkable ability to withstand hardship, siege or earthquake. There are few reminders that the city was besieged so recently, with perhaps the only visible sign being the profusion of bright new terracotta tiles atop the elegant, stone-built houses.
Even at the height of summer, gentle sea-breezes blow, tempering the heat of the day. Dusk is the most evocative time, as the sun sets, the stone seems to glow from within, and swallows swoop around the town walls. The coast northwest of Dubrovnik meanders in and out of small inlets, where shallow waters lap against little jetties and pine trees provide dappled shade. Aristocrats from the days of the Republic of Dubrovnik built their summer villas here. Zaton Mali and Zaton Veliki are two secluded spots to which only a curious few descend from the coastal road. Boasting a couple of restaurants overlooking the waters, theres no need to stray very far.
