It started out as a winery, built back in 1888 by Gaetano Romano for his wife.The house is still owned by the same family, but has been sensitively converted into a quaint guesthouse. Of the three apartments, weve chosen Palmento - a cosy studio ideal for romantic breaks à deux. Inside, its open plan, whilst outside theres a shared terrace and a sleepy courtyard surrounded by orange and lemon trees. The dreamy landscape is the real winner; Casale Romano is tucked in the Parco Fluviale dellAlcantara. With lush countryside as far as the eye can see, its away-from-it-all Sicily at its best. A car is a must-have, as its seriously rural. Sicilian wines and spumante have been produced here since 1800, and the owners will happily organise tours and tastings. The one-bedroom apartment is elegantly and traditionally furnished. At mealtimes, the restaurant serves home-cooked cuisine, and you can dine inside, or al fresco, with views to Mount Etna. When you really want to relax, head to the gardens where youll nd a rectangular swimming pool anked by sun loungers and tables and chairs.
