Winding up along a white road towards Podere Consani, through lush countryside, you emerge from chestnut woods onto a sunny plateau topped with a charming group of honey-coloured stone buildings set on the edge of a grassy orchard, with the Tuscan plain spreading out far below. Beyond the hills to the right is the sea, behind rise the foothills of the craggy Apuan Alps and in the foreground the view - spectacular on a clear day - reaches far beyond Lucca. Podere Consani
This gem of a medieval town grew up on its silk industry in the 12th and 13th centuries. It boasts a ne cathedral, many Gothic and Romanesque churches and a piazza which originated as a Roman amphitheatre. With Pisa, Florence and the coast all a short drive away, Lucca makes a good base for exploring this lovely area so car hire is highly recommended. Just three kilometres outside Lucca in Massa Pisana, is Villa La Principessa, an impressive ivy-covered mansion in a secluded, relaxing setting in private parkland.The spacious gardens which surround the hotel have a swimming pool where deckchairs and sunbeds are available free of charge. In the ample gardens of the main house, where the owners Lelio and Susan live, there are two separate country cottages, La Capanna and Casa di Cherubino. Simply Travel have chosen La Capanna for our guests, however for larger groups both cottages are available. The owners produce their own wine and olive oil and hospitable and knowledgeable Susan somehow nds the time, between caring for the neighbouring stables, horses and grooms, goats and dogs, to assist guests with their plans for adventurous outings.There is a good choice of restaurants within 10-15 minutes by car.
