Umbria
On almost every hilltop, ancient walls encircle medieval villages so seldom visited that you often feel youre making your own very special discovery.
Umbria merges seamlessly with Tuscany, for this province, Italys Green Heart, displays the same timeless components as her northern neighbour; a landscape of undulating hills swathed with silvery-green olive groves and cypress trees, which dip into valleys of vineyards and golden sunflowers. Umbria also has more than its fair share of celebrated beauties. Gubbio is home to the superb Palazzo dei Consoli. Perugia, the capital of Umbria, has a fascinating and ancient centre, with one of the most impressive medieval palazzos in Italy. Captivating Todi perches dramatically atop its craggy site, while outside its medieval walls lies one of Italys most perfectly executed
Renaissance churches. Orvieto is famed not only for its white wine but also its clifftop vantage point and its Gothic cathedral. Like many other Umbrian towns, Spoleto has antique origins, seen in the Roman stones of its walls. In the winding backstreets of the pilgrims destination of Assisi, or the fortress high above the town, the pink stone resonates with the echoes of the past. Sleeping away in its land-locked fastness, Umbria has remained one of the most traditional regions of Italy. The place has a serenity that even a visitor can find both profoundly relaxing and completely irresistible. Rich in walking trails, Umbria is also just as wealthy in flowers and wildlife.
