Cargèse
Two kilometres to the south of Car gese is enchanting Menasina Beach, with its spectacular emerald water.
The string of sandy beaches north and south of this charming village, the splendid mountains just inland, and the pinnacles of the Calanques - the most dramatic coastline in Europe - just a twenty minute drive away, should be what springs to mind when the name Cargèse is mentioned. Yet its renowned also for its Greekness, as it is still known as the Village Grec from the Greek refugees who settled there two centuries ago. With its pastel houses climbing up the headland, its kitchen gardens, its palm trees, hibiscus and figs and its pretty fishing boats in the harbour, this large village certainly has its own special atmosphere. A stroll around the backstreets leads you to a selection of restaurants, pizzerias and cafés.
The countryside around the village - meadows, hills, woods and hedgerows - is lovely for gentle rambles. A few minutes drive away is the charming hamlet of Lozzi, whilst behind Cargèse, towering over the village and the sea, is the original settlement of the Greeks of Cargèse, Paomia. But Cargèse is so relaxing and the beaches so impressive, that its hard to leave the seaside. Glorious Pero Beach is the closest of Cargèses three beaches (1km away), and Chiuni Beach, about 6km north, is equally lovely. Within a short drive are yet more unspoilt sands, from Arone to the north to Sagone to the south, all backed by mountain landscapes.
