Corfu The sea washes to the lower slopes of the mighty Mount Pantokrator, forming a beguilingly indented shore of steep, wooded slopes rising straight out of translucent turquoise water & punctuated by tiny anchorages & inlets. A tranquil cove, clear blue water, pearly pebbles, clusters of colourful cottages and a solitary taverna - these are not the images which spring to mind at the name Corfu unless you are one of the small band of cognoscenti who know that many hidden corners of this enchanted island remain wonderfully unspoilt, offering some of the best opportunities of any Greek island for exploring off the beaten track. In Corfu Town a maze of enchanting backstreets open onto unexpected courtyards, endless elegant cafés and a sophisticated range of shops. About half an hours drive north you will find the most beautiful and unsullied stretch of coastline on the entire island, while further up the coast are the small seaside villages of Kalami and Koulour, boasting glittering blue bays fringed with pine and olive trees and a collection of welcoming tavernas. Agios Stephanos is a glorious horseshoe-shaped bay and remains an authentic fishing village with a handful of unpretentious tavernas, which set their tables out right at the waters edge. Kassiopi has become a thriving harbour town, where imposing fortress walls, evidence of the Roman rule, stand guard over the bustling activity below. The road winds on to the unspoilt beaches of Avlaki and Coyevinas, neither of which seem to get busy, even in the height of the season, and the sea here is among the cleanest in the whole of Corfu.
