Nauplion Whether to explore some of the worlds most important historical sites, or simply to absorb the atmospheric charm of Greeces prettiest town, Nauplion makes a superb base In the northern corner of the Argolic Gulf, Nauplion is regarded as the prettiest town in mainland Greece. It was modern Greeces first capital after the country was liberated from the Turks in 1828. But its the Venetian occupation of the 14th and 17th centuries thats left the biggest stamp on the town. You only have to look around to see the legacy of Italianate architecture.Tall, neo-classical mansions. Elegant marble-paved squares. And balconied houses peppered with bright bougainvillea. Down by the water, a modern promenade curves round the bay. Its the perfect vantage point for one of Nauplions must-sees -the mighty Palidi fortress. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, its stone walls thread around the rocky hills - a soul-stirring sight. Across the bay, in the middle of the harbour, sits another 17th century Venetian castle. The Bourtzi rises from a small islet a romantic reminder of days gone by. And while Palidi steals the limelight, there are plenty of other stars waiting in the wings. Two smooth pebble beaches. A handful of shops, galleries and jewellers. And plenty of restaurants offering a taste of all things Greek. This picture-postcard place has barely been changed by time. And thats the best thing - its traditional enough to charm you right out of your daydreams.
