Pelion Pelion is best suited to those who appreciate the simple pleasures in life - relaxing on unspoilt beaches & exploring traditional villages. The Pelion Peninsula is a microcosm of all that is most appealing about Greece. A slender peninsula protruding deep into the turquoise Aegean Sea, boasting splendid beaches and archetypal fishing villages, it is also a verdant landscape where apple and pear orchards and extensive chestnut forests thrive. The forested slopes of the impressive Mount Pelion are ideal for long, shaded walks in the summer months. Freshwater springs keep the area lush and green, and in autumn the turning leaves paint the countryside in reds and golds. The foothills of Mount Pelion stretch all the way down to the coast, and in their folds lie many charming coastal villages. On the eastern slopes, the forests and orchards also reach down to the shoreline, so many of the unspoilt beaches have a backdrop of dense vegetation. Popular in peak season with Greek visitors, the little resorts of Pelions east coast are little known to foreign holidaymakers and retain an authentic atmosphere. Although barely 10 miles from the Aegean coast, Pelions west coast is different - the hills are gentler, and the vegetation more typically Mediterranean, with pinewoods and olive groves. The main appeal here is the calm waters of the Pagasitikos Gulf, which is almost landlocked by the mainland and the tip of the peninsula.
