From the sleepy, picturesque hamlet of Gökcebel, a 500m long track leads to this hillside villa. Set in three quarters of an acre of wooded grounds, green spreads in every direction as far as the eye can see, and the stone-built bungalow crouches at the centre of this dramatic landscape. Pebble mosaic pathways wind through the grounds, passing a bright sun terrace and a weathered olive tree which is reputed to be 1,000 years old, on the way to the pool area in the lower gardens. With comfortable seating areas around and overlooking the pool, guests have the option of sun or shade between dips, or while waiting for a light Mediterranean lunch to settle. The tranquillity of the setting has been carried through to the interior, where white muslin curtains utter at windows and doors and generous, comfortable furniture makes staying indoors as much of a pleasure as going out. The open plan living-dining areas French doors lead onto the long open terrace which runs along the front of the house, and where seats are well placed to enjoy the view of unspoilt countryside all around. A second set of French doors from the terrace leads back into the house via the master bedroom, with its luxurious en suite bathroom featuring a full-size bath, power shower and stylish marble, mosaic and dark wood scheme. When we discovered Villa Ayse next door, we fell in love with it and so did you; so much so that it is one of our most popular villas, and Ayse and her husband Manfred had to build themselves a little retreat nearby to have somewhere to live.They now live in Bodrum but Manfred is often found maintaining the garden and pool. We loved the mix of sheer comfort and casual elegance that Ayse has conjured up, so we were delighted to see her secret hideaway cottage - Caria Villa - had the same individual touch, this time with an harmonious Eastern avour, so we persuaded her to make it available for our clients. Inside, the Ottoman theme is lightly done, with kilims on the oors, a generous replace and muslin curtains and intimate sitting area with the open plan kitchen and dining area all combined to create an informal atmosphere. A mezzanine window from the bedroom on the upper oor overlooks the living area, suggesting the older Turkish style when the women of the house would observe the main areas of the house, hidden behind latticed shutters.The bedroom has a large window with views of the pool with its cleverly designed decking area, and across a small landing, the shower room is a cool blue.
