Kalkan & Fethiye
Once a traditional fishing village, Kalkan has grown into a small holiday resort, with a pretty harbour, modern hotels and a large choice of good restaurants. Nearby Fethiye dates back 3000 years, and has a tantalising blend of old and new.
Kalkan descends to the sea in terraces of whitewashed houses and steep cobbled streets, a colourful harbour sleepy under the midday heat. Stroll to a café or restaurant, or wander around the Aladdins caves that line the backstreets.Youll find fruit, vegetable and grocery stalls that stay open until bedtime alongside a good selection of restaurants and a few bars. Diving down the narrow alleyways youll find yourself in the tiny intricate maze of old houses - some crumbling, some restored. During the day, Kalkan is laid-back, as visitors enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Lycian coast. The pebbly beach next to Kalkans harbour was recently extended
and is more than adequate for swimming and sunbathing. The Gulf of Fethiye is one of Turkeys most diverse regions, with a stunning coastline, majestic mountain ranges, beautiful islands, famous beaches and archaeological sites. Fethiye itself is a bustling harbour town with a lively yet authentic atmosphere. Its shops will entice you in, and there are plenty of good restaurants along the waterfront and tucked away in the back streets. The region offers ideal terrain for walkers, and rambling through the countryside is a pleasurable experience, particularly in the spring when the hills are carpeted with vivid wild flowers.
