Dubrovnik Riviera & Islands Central Dalmatia's sweeping coastline beguiles visitors, with a dramatic, rocky mountain ridge screening beautiful beaches and lush vegetation from the mainland. Dubrovnik, or Ragusa as it was formerly known, has always looked seawards and the republic which grew up around it stretched along the mountainous coast up to the Peljesac Peninsula. Over the centuries, Dubrovnik has shown a remarkable ability to withstand hardship, siege or earthquake. Running the length of the city is the Stradun', the limestoneflagged thoroughfare burnished bright by centuries of footwear. From here, narrow alleyways ascend to the city walls. Some 4km outside the city, the wooded Lapad Peninsula is centred around a small shingle beach and its shallow waters attract bathers. Zvonimira is an attractive, tree-lined boulevard which offers plenty of choice for dining. The coast northwest of Dubrovnik meanders in and out of small inlets, where shallow waters lap against little jetties and pine trees provide dappled shade. Here, the pace of life is unhurried. Zaton Mali and Zaton Veliki are two secluded spots. As the hamlets boast a couple of restaurants, there is no real need to stray very far. Trsteno, a little further north, is home to Croatia's oldest arboretum. The tiny port and beautiful beach will keep visitors busy, but for a day out, the twin settlements of Ston and Mali Ston are just 30 minutes away for Romanesque remains and fantastic seafood.
