KEFALONIA
...ON VIEW
AG H I O S H E L I S Aghios Helis is a tiny place but still has a few tavernas, a couple of bars and mini-markets and a lovely beach at the bottom of a steep hillside. The nearby village of Svoronata also has a taverna or two, but the livelier attractions of Argostoli and Lassi are within easy reach. Distance from airport approximately 5 kilometres. TRAPEZAKI Separated from the busier beach at Lourdas by a peaceful stretch of sandy beach known as Lithero are the sandy coves of Trapezaki, lying at the foot of a steep hillside. The village itself sits high above the coast in rural surroundings. There are a few mini-markets in the area and Trapezaki has a handful of local tavernas, but visitors need only travel as far as the nearby village of Moutsata to find a bakery and other more varied amenities. Distance from airport approximately 10 kilometres. LO U R DA S The region of Lourdas stretches from the village of Vlachata, winding down through the steep cypress-clad slopes of Mount Ainos to the village of Lourdata where shops and tavernas lie alongside traditional kafenion under the shady plane trees beside the coarse sandy beach. Lourdas Bay is fringed by five kilometres of sand and pebble beach and home to several tavernas. Distance from airport approximately 15 kilometres. SKALA Famous for being Kefalonia's finest beach resort, Skala lies on a long stretch of golden sand and shingle, overlooked by a selection of beachside tavernas and fringed by a pine forest. The resort enjoys a lively beach life with a variety of watersports available, along with scuba diving and glass bottom boat trips. Further along the beach, sand dunes provide secluded surroundings for more solitary sunbathing. There are plenty of tavernas, restaurants, bars and supermarkets along the main street which leads down to the town square. Distance from airport approximately 37 kilometres. FISKARDO The elegant buildings which line Fiskardo's deep horseshoe-shaped harbour retain their impressive Venetian grandeur. Popular with the trendy yachting fraternity, boats of all shapes and sizes bob alongside the bustling quayside and the village offers an array of tavernas, along with a bakery, a bank and a mini-market or two. The scenic countryside around Fiskardo is wonderful for walkers and sunbathers wanting to explore beyond the town's own small pebbly bay will find a whole host of secluded beaches within a few kilometres. Distance from airport approximately 57 kilometres.
