RESORTS CANARY ISLANDS ...ON VIEW L A N Z A R OT E As its sun-drenched climate suggests, Lanzarote is just seventy miles off the coast of Africa and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. Its volcanic origins are evident not only in the dark sands which fringe many of its beaches, but also in its dramatic, almost lunar, landscape. One of the most spectacular features on the island are the lava fields and sinister craters of the awesome Montañas del Fuego - Fire Mountains. P U E R TO D E L CA R M E N Once a small fishing village, Puerto del Carmen has grown into a bustling cosmopolitan resort which is the largest and liveliest on the island, but still retains a certain traditional charm. The locals boast that their beach is the best on Lanzarote and many would agree. Add to this a huge choice of activities for all ages, a bewildering array of shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants and a nonstop nightlife and it's easy to see why so many holidaymakers return here year after year. Distance from airport approximately 6 kilometres. P L AYA B L A N CA Nestling in the sunny southwest corner of the island, Playa Blanca takes its name from the unusual soft white sands of its sun-drenched beaches. Once a small fishing village, the resort has quickly grown into a bustling and lively holiday resort with a great selection of restaurants, cafés and bars along its beachside promenade and a fair few supermarkets and souvenir shops to suit most tastes and pockets. Despite its rapid growth, the centre of town retains much of its traditional charm and with its easy access to the livelier attractions of Puerto del Carmen and the glorious beaches at Papagayo, it's not difficult to understand Playa Blanca's increasing popularity. Distance from airport approximately 35 kilometres. CORRALEJO Once a fishing village, Corralejo is today a popular resort with lots of holidayfriendly amenities, from a water park and thalassotherapy centre, to mini-golf and bowling. The best known of its glorious beaches is Flag and Glass in the Olivia area, complemented by a good selection of shops and supermarkets, plenty of excellent restaurants and a variety of evening entertainment. Distance from airport approximately 36 kilometres. P U E R TO CA L E R O Developed as a luxury marina only twenty years ago, Puerto Calero is just a few kilometres from Puerto del Carmen, but a world away in style and atmosphere. The focal point of this rapidly growing resort is its picturesque yachting harbour. Anglers and sailors alike will find plenty to attract them here, with lots of opportunities for boat trips and deep sea fishing, as well as a cluster of harbourside bars and an excellent selection of restaurants, from the rather exclusive Yacht Club, to a variety of international cuisine. Distance from airport approximately 30 kilometres. FUERTEVENTURA The second largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura lies less than 95km off the African Coast and is the least populated. The island has spectacular desert-like scenery, lofty volcanoes and desolate lava fields, plus mile upon mile of sandy beaches.
