RESORTS GOZO ...ON VIEW V I C TO R I A Victoria (or Rabat as it is known locally) is the capital of Gozo, a town dominated by a latemedieval citadel, encircled by bastion walls with spectacular views all over the island. In the town's main square, a small market is held every morning from sunrise and in the old town the narrow streets are lined with beautiful buildings. More modern features include banks and a rather stylish shopping centre. The town is within easy reach of several beaches, the nearest being a few kilometres south at Xlendi Bay. Distance from harbour approximately 6 kilometres. S A N N AT Set on a hillside close to the highest cliffs on the island at Ta' Cenc, Sannat is a peaceful little village in splendidly scenic surroundings. Despite its compact size, the village boasts an impressive church as well as a variety of local shops, bars and restaurants. The fascinating L-Imramma' pre-historic temple can be found nearby amongst other pre-historic remains and a steep rocky valley leads down to the pebbly beach and wonderful scuba diving opportunities of Mgarr ix-Xini Bay. Distance from harbour approximately 8 kilometres. X AG H R A Xaghra (pronounced Shara) is perched on a high limestone plateau, surrounded by the pre-historic sites for which it is famous. An ornate baroque church forms the focal point of the village with the laid-back tranquillity of the church square reflecting the town's relaxed character. There are bakeries, a butcher and a supermarket or two, as well as a selection of restaurants and snack bars and a few kilometres away is the beautiful beach at Ramla Bay, its golden sand lying around a picturesque bay below the hilltop Calypso cave. Distance from harbour approximately 7 kilometres. QALA Qala's name (pronounced Arla) means sheltered harbour and its location on the easternmost coast means that it enjoys breathtaking views from its craggy shoreline across to the islands of Comino and Cominetto. Qala offers wonderful views from around the village and one can see Sicily on a clear day. The village also has a good variety of bars and places to eat and the beach at Hondoq ir-Rummien is only a short drive away. Distance from harbour approximately 4 kilometres. GHARB & GHAMMER Dominated by a baroque church, Gharb (pronounced Arb) is a place of strong religious significance, its history steeped in stories of local visions and miracles. A supermarket sells essential provisions, the local bar serves pasta and pizza and the village even has a couple of restaurants. Pilgrims come from all over Europe to visit the basilica of Ta' Pinu at nearby Ghammar (Ammar) and a short drive away, Dwejra Bay is home to the natural wonders of Fungus Rock' the Azure Window' and the Inland Sea, as well as some of the best scuba diving in the Med. Distance from harbour approximately 14 kilometres. S A N L AW R E N Z San Lawrenz although small, is well equipped with a couple of mini markets and a restaurant. Its surroundings enjoy a rich historical heritage dating back more than five hundred years. On the outskirts of San Lawrenz at the Gozo Crafts Village, the Gozitans sell a variety of local crafts and to the west, a scenic road leads down to Dwejra Bay and the Azure Window'.
