East & South Africa
What's it like on safari?
You'll enjoy close encounters with the most amazing wildlife...
You could join us on a big game safari amongst the prolific wildlife of the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania; with the lions of Kruger National Park in South Africa, or tracking the rhino of Etosha National Park in Namibia. On vehicle-based game drives you could end up just a few metres away from a cheetah with her cubs or watching giraffe and elephant at a waterhole less than five metres away!
What equipment do you need?
No specialist equipment is necessary. On camping safaris we'll provide good quality tents and foam sleeping mats, the cooking and eating utensils, drinking water and the services of an expert Group Leader and Safari Guides. On some trips we may ask you to bring a sleeping bag. Binoculars are obviously a good idea for spotting the wildlife and we'll detail precise clothing requirements on the Trip Dossier.
What actually happens when you're on safari?
You'll be up as the sun rises (or just before!) and straight out on an early game drive; this is the best time to see the wildlife. Then it'll be back to camp for late breakfast/lunch and to relax during the heat of the day. Typically you'll then enjoy a second longer game drive or walk from mid afternoon and return to camp as the sun is setting. On many trips you'll also have the opportunity to head out on an exciting night-drive.
Camping or lodges...
If you like the idea of really being out in the great outdoors, helping out with a few of the camp chores and the camaraderie of camp life - then opt for a participative camping safari. If you prefer the idea of small family-friendly lodges and chalets, often with swimming pools, then pick an accommodated or Adventure Collection trip. Details can be found on all the trip pages and Trip Dossiers, but call one of our Travel Consultants to discuss what will best suit your family.
