and life. You'll get a real flavour of the Orient visiting city markets, before heading to Hakone to explore the area's famous sulphur pools. Mountains & Castles You'll travel by trains to Tsumago, nestled amidst the the Japanese Alps. Here you'll hike along forested trails before speeding through the countryside towards Hiroshima, stopping off en route to discover the medieval castle of Hikone. Temples & Shrines Kyoto is full of shrines, temples and gardens and is surrounded by tranquil waters. One of the most famous sights is the golden folds of the Kinkaku-ji Temple. Mysterious Monks Heading into the hills to Mt. Koya you'll be treated to a unique experience. Staying with monks, you'll enjoy traditional food and learn about ancient culture at a special morning prayer ceremony.

Minimum age: 10 years. Japan is famed for its efficient rail network so as part of the adventure, expect most journeys to be by train. The hike from Magome to Tsumago is on relatively easy terrain.
