Beautiful Kandalama
Kandalama is the perfect base from which to visit Sigiriya rock, which you'll ascend to take in superb views over the surrounding countryside, and also to explore the ancient Buddhist cities of Anuradhapura and Mihintale. The nearby tank, or reservoir, attracts a myriad of birds and other wildlife perfect for nature lovers.
The Hill Country
Kandy is the country's cultural capital. Here, visits to the Temple of the Tooth where
one of Buddha's teeth is held in a jewel-encrusted casket and a dance display, demonstrate why the town is so important. You leave Kandy by train and journey deeper into the hill country. From Nuwara Eliya you'll visit a tea factory to learn more about our favourite brew, and explore the famous Horton Plains.
Elephants and Yala National Park
Travelling south to the shores of the Indian Ocean you'll
pay a visit to the Elephant Transit Home before enjoying safaris in both Yala and Bundala National Parks - well known for their elephants and bird life respectively. Next, a visit to the World Heritage Site of Galle's old town provides an insight into the island's colonial history, before you end your journey travelling along the Indian Ocean coast to Colombo.
