Lying 80º north, Svalbard is truly on the top of the world head north from here and all you'll encounter is Arctic Ocean and ice. These remote islands of midnight sunshine are nothing short of spectacular. This is the stage for an incredible wildlife adventure as you go in search of reindeer, Arctic birds, seals, walruses, whales and above all, the majestic polar bear. Nothing compares to seeing these incredible giants in their natural habitat.
Itinerary
Day 1 Board ship in Longyearbyen. Day 2 Svalbard Following a clockwise
sanctuary is home to a variety of other marine animals, and photo oppotunities are numerous. This is a chance to see the elusive polar bear! Day 9/10 Bourbonhamna Among the marine life in the Arctic, the white Beluga whale is one of the most recognisable, and there is a good chance to see these fine creatures here. Day 11 Disembark in Longyearbyen.
Essentials
Graded easy. You should be in good health and be able to get in and out of a Zodiac inflatable boat. Walks are all optional. Day 3/4 14th of July Glacier Named after a previous expedition, this glacier can be explored by Zodiacs. You will also visit the Arctic research centre of Ny Alesund. This is a fantastic environment for birds, so keep your binoculars handy. Day 5/6 Smeerenburg Once known as Blubber Town, this community still has visible signs of the old whaling station: blubber ovens and whalebones dot the landscape.
