Set off on a week's varied walking on the beautiful and dramatic Atlantic island of Madeira. Although relatively small, Madeira packs a lot of punch. From the stunning coastal cliffs of the north to the hidden valleys of the interior and the peak of Pico Ruivo - this little island is full of surprises. You'll explore on foot using the amazing network of levadas (irrigation channels) passing by wonderful scenery and an abundance of unique semi-tropical flora.

Itinerary
Day 1 Fly to Funchal; short transfer to Day 2 Ponta de Sao Lourenco Walk along the Ponta de Sao Lourenco. Wildflowers and rocks characterise the landscape. This is a classic walk, hard but with wonderful scenery, where you can only hear yourself and the sea. Day 3 South Side Walking Walk on the southern side of Madeira and end, after a scenic stretch along a cliff trail, on the north coast. Set off along the little Levada do Caniçal, climb up to the cliffs at Boca do Risco and along to Porto da Cruz. Day 4 Levada do Caldeirao Verde
Transfer from Santana and then on to Queimadas (natural park) and walk along your hotel in Machico Levada do Caldeirao Verde. Finish this walk at the isolated village of Ilha. Day 5 Pico Ruivo Today you ascend the island's highest mountain, Pico Ruivo (1862m). The descent follows a spectacular ridge via Torrinhas Pass and over the saddle of Pico do Jorge to Encumeada. Day 6 Pico Grande From Encumeada you walk through woods of chestnut and eucalyptus and then traverse below the rocky escarpment of Pico Grande, enjoying views to the south and back to the west.
