Europe's largest national park, the Picos de Europa is an area of dramatic beauty and home to many protected species. On this trip, you'll walk through one of the truly unspoilt places in Spain that few visitors ever discover. It is a spectacular range of limestone peaks, ridges and deep valleys. The high ground is a 'moonscape' of dramatic rocky terrain almost devoid of vegetation, while the lower valleys are full of beautiful wildflowers in spring.

Itinerary
Day 1 Fly to Bilbao, drive to Arenas de
path leads up to the high pastures of Nava. Here the scenery changes to one more reminiscent of the Yorkshire Dales. The path leads to the summit of Juan Robre with commanding views of Arenas far below and the jagged peaks of the central massif in the distance. Day 3 Casano Gorge Venture into the rarely visited foothills of the Western Massif for a varied circular walk, including an ascent of Pena Pandescura before dropping down through an ancient forest to the Casano Gorge. Day 4 Cares Gorge Follow the footpath through the dramatic Cares Gorge as it clings to the rock and passes through Cabrales. rough-hewn tunnels, affording spectacular views of the landscape and river. Day 5 Free day Today is free for you to try some exhilarating activities (additional charge) such as caving, canyoning, or canoeing. Or you can visit the coast or simply relax. Day 6 Pena Main Walk up to the Pandebano Col for stunning views of the monolithic peak of Naranjo de Bulnes. From here you continue up to one of the classic viewpoints of the Picos, the summit of Peña Main. Day 7 Mancondiu Peak The twin summits of Mancondiu are the highest point you will reach and they afford fantasic views of the Central and Eastern massifs. Day 8 Transfer to Bilbao and fly home.
Essentials
Moderate walking trip. On most days you can expect to walk for 5-7 hours. There are some strenuous ascents. The maximum altitude is 2,214m and the average is 1,500m. It is possible to opt out of some of the walks. A good level of walking and general fitness is required. Insider's view
Northern Spain brings back so many memories for me, it's such a fantastic place. Walking in the hills of the Picos de Europa, there are craggy peaks and vultures circling. Whilst the walking is great, it is nice to be able to return to the same hotel every night and enjoy delicious home cooked food there. Alistair Butchers - Region Manager
