Poland is perhaps still best known for its cultural heritage, but outside of the more famous destinations lies a world of peaceful mountains, rolling white landscapes, high mountain passes and fabulous panoramas. The Beskidy and Peininy mountain ranges on the border with Slovakia are the focus of a week of snowshoeing. Snowshoes offer the perfect way to explore the national parks and ascend the peaks en route during the winter months.. 2012 Sun 15 Jan - Sun 22 Jan Sun 29 Jan - Sun 5 Feb Sun 19 Feb - Sun 26 Feb Sun 26 Feb - Sun 4 Mar With flights Without flights Itinerary Day 1 Fly to Krakow; drive to Krynica. Day 2 Bukowina Pass You'll start your Turbacz passing mountain huts along the way, before reaching Zakopane in the afternoon. Day 7 Krakow Drive back to Krakow, one of central Europe's most beautiful cities. You have free time here to explore the winding streets. Day 8 Fly home. Essentials Day 6 Zakopane Descend from Mt On most days you'll be out for up to 7 hours and although travel across snow is much easier with snowshoes (compared to just boots), a good level of walking/ general fitness is required. Flight schedules and preferred airlines can change. trekking with a gentle ascent to the Bukowina Pass (993m), on a clear day the view from the top is outstanding. Day 3 Sucha Valley Today's trek starts in Sucha Valley, where you are likely to encounter shepherd's chalets and refuges and great views of the Tatra Mountains. Day 4 Slovakian border Continuing on from your pension, climb the mountain ridge along the border from Slovakia before returning to Jaworki in the evening. Day 5 Mt Turbacz The highest mountain in the region, Mt Turbacz (1,310m) is today's goal. The climb is steady, crossing Borek Pass before reaching the plateau of Turbacz - another spot with splendid views of the rugged Tatra Mountains. Insider's view Snowshoeing is an experience unlike any other, I had not tried anything like this before, but it was great fun and harder than it looks! The views across the mountains all covered in snow are spectacular and it's fascinating to pass through small villlages and towns as you are walking.
