From the Shore Temples of Mahabalipuram, to the decorated temple towers of Madurai, you'll cross the plains entering Kerala and enjoy the tranquillity of Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the best of southern India's wildlife. Wander fragrant spice bazaars, colourful antique shops and lush rubber, tea, and coffee plantations. For many, the highlight of this journey is spending time aboard a houseboat on Kerala's backwaters.

Airport; transfer to Cochin. Day 2/3 Cochin Visit fragrant spice bazaars, antique shops, Mattancherry Palace and Fort Cochin. Enjoy a Kathakali dance evening performance. Day 4/5 Ootacamund Ride the famous toy train through rolling plantations, visit a tea garden and learn the secrets of tea making. Day 6 Mudumalai NP Safari into Mudumalai National Park, home to tigers, panthers, elephants and spotted deer. Day 7/8 Mysore Visit the Maharaja's Palace for lunch, view the ornate illuminated stained glass windows. Explore Keshava Temple - an excellent example of Hoysala architecture. Day 9 Mahabalipuram Travel to Mahabalipuram, cycle around Shore

Temple and visit the rock carving known as Arjuna's Penance. Day 10 Pondicherry Drive the scenic coastal road to French-influenced Pondicherry and visit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Day 11 Madurai Witness mysterious rituals in the Sri Meenakshi Temple, a labyrinth of lamp-lit corridors and shrines. Day 12/13 Periyar NP Travel through rubber, tea and coffee plantations to a spice farm. Tour Periyar National Park with a forest guide, tracking elephants. Day 14 Kerala backwaters Cruise the backwaters on a houseboat along palm-lined rivers, lagoons and emerald rice paddies. Day 15/16 Cochin Free time to explore Cochin's medieval Portuguese, Dutch and British Raj architecture before you fly home. A gentle, easy paced trip, suitable for anyone in reasonable health. Insider's view
The outstanding food, lush scenery and incredible kindness of the local people will certainly impact on your memory. I enjoyed searching for tigers in the national parks. But cruising the backwaters of Kerala was my highlight, a wonderful way to explore the local area. Iain Shiels Region Manager
