Australasia / Australia & Papua New Guinea Papua New Guinea Day 11. Karawari [B, L, D] This morning fly to Karawari and transfer by boat to Karawari Lodge, where you spend the next two nights. The indigenous Sepik peoples are thought to have originated in hills behind the Blackwater and Karawari Rivers where they once lived semi-nomadic lives hunting, foraging, fishing in mountain streams and warding off headhunting raids from their neighbours. Days 12. Karawari [B, L, D] Karawari is an excellent location from which to explore the lowland rainforest and birds with around 225 species occurring here. Forest dwelling birds include cassowaries, brush-turkeys and scrub fowls, rails, lorikeets, parrots and cockatoos, owls and frogmouths, kingfishers, bee-eaters, hornbills, flycatchers, honeyeaters, mannikins, mynas, bowerbirds and four species of birds of paradise! Day 13. Port Moresby [B, L, D] This morning you return to Port Moresby via Mt Hagen where you spend one night at the Airways Hotel. The following day you take a half-day city tour which includes the National Museum and the National Botanic Gardens. Days 14 & 15. Port Moresby/Homeward [B, L] After lunch return to Singapore for the night before flying back home the following day. Mt Hagen/Tari [B, L, D] Paradise in PNG! 15 days London to London Days 1 & 2. Singapore Depart London for Singapore arriving early the following morning. Make your way to your hotel where the day is free to explore. Day 3 & 4. Mount Hagen [B, L, D (Day 4 only)] Fly overnight to Port Moresby and onward to Mount Hagen where you will be met and transferred to the Rondon Ridge Hotel for three nights. Days 5 & 6. Mt Hagen [B, L, D] Enjoy walking around the nature trails near Mount Rondon. This area is extremely rich in plant, mammal and birdlife. Birds of paradise and bower birds, including the Superb Bird of Paradise, Stephanie's Astrapia, Macgregor's Bowerbird, Brown Sicklebill, Short-tailed Paradigalla, and the Raggiana Bird of Paradise can all be found in the gardens of the lodge. This morning you take a short flight to Tari, where you spend the next four nights at Ambua Lodge situated some 2100 metres above sea level in the remote Southern Highlands. The Tari Gap moss forests are stunted and patchy and interspersed with vast expanses of natural grasslands making home for an rich variety of flora and fauna. A beautiful Dendrobium orchid, that produces vivid red, orange and yellow flowers, is particularly common and easily seen on rock faces or tree fern trunks. A wealth of butterflies, moths, cicadas, beetles and other insects live within these forests and the valley is home to an amazing variety of birds, including thirteen species of the 48 birds of paradise. It is the rich fauna of this area that naturalists and birdwatchers come from all over the world to see. A total of some 180 species have been recorded from Tari, around the Ambua Lodge area and upwards to the Tari Gap. Birds commonly seen include the Buff-banded Rail, Long-tailed Shrike, Pied Chat, Orange-crowned Fairywren, Mountain Peltops, Friendly Faintail, Blue-grey Robin, and Hooded Mannikin.
