Rethymnon
Crete
Crete has much more besides beaches. For a start, 4,000 years of civilisation have left a legacy of world-class archaeological sites. There is a vast array of interesting day and nights out, whether by hire car or covered by one of the professionally organised excursions. But if relaxation is all you desire, then there are more than enough resorts for those who simply wish to lie in the sun all day. The liveliest places are Hersonissos and Malia, with enough nightlife between them to keep visitors entertained. Rethymnon offers a more relaxed pace of life, with charming local tavernas and a selection of bars.
Stalis
Situated mid-way between Hersonissos and Malia on Cretes northern coast, Stalis has an excellent sandy beach and a good choice of watersports. It never gets too lively here, and Stalis enjoys an excellent selection of tavernas and restaurants, where fish is a particular speciality. A good base for exploring further afield, its an easy bus ride to Malia, Hersonissos, and the island capital of Heraklion. Transfer from airport: approx. 1hr 15mins.
Rethymnon
The resort of Rethymnon is dominated by its Venetian fortress and sleepy fishing harbour. An endless stretch of sand and shingle beach, great shopping and numerous restaurants, bars and tavernas give it a reputation as a resort with something for everyone. For a quieter time head east to Panormos, a peaceful village backed by rugged mountains and olive groves with a pretty little harbour. Transfer from airport: approx 2hrs.
Hersonissos
Hersonissos has small sand and shingle beaches that lie alongside rocky coves, they stretch all along the edge of the resort. Theres an attractive little port and the pleasant promenade is lined with shops, bars and tavernas. Never dull, Hersonissos hots-up even more at sundown and theres plenty of vibrant entertainment at the restaurants, tavernas, bars and discos. Transfer from airport: approx 1hr.
Malia
With a lively atmosphere on the sandy beach throughout the day and into the evening, Malia is a must for young and energetic holidaymakers. There is a fabulous choice of top bars and clubs with music to suit all tastes. There is also a good selection of international food available with the Old Village catering for more traditional Greek cuisine. Transfer from airport: approx 1hr 40mins.
