The Ambasciatori teeters on the edge of a cliff that nosedives into the Mediterranean - the views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius are sensational. What's more, it's in a quiet spot in Sorrento, just a 10-minute walk into the heart of town. The hotel itself was built back in the Fifties, during the Riviera heydays. It's a snapshot of vintage Italy � marble floors, twinkling chandeliers, gilt-framed mirrors and fine antiques. Outside, the swimming pool has a special hydromassage section and is surrounded by a terrace. You'll also find a bar here, with a barbecue grill at lunchtime. For a change of scene, an elevator whisks guests down the cliff to a private bathing platform mid-May to mid-October. The restaurant - Le Muse - deserves a mention, too.
