Croatia Best bits " Water sports " Family-friendly beaches " Diving What to eat Above: Historic coastal town of Porec. Imagine miles of immaculate coastline and you might think of Portugal. Say countless remote islands and crystal clear waters and you might think of Greece. Put the two together and you have Croatia where you can enjoy the unique tastes and traditions of an unspoilt, undiscovered corner of Europe. With 6000kms of coastline and over 1000 islands (only 50 of which are populated) sailing and seafood are a speciality. Find your own piece of paradise in Brijuni, the largest of the Tranquil Islands, which is steeped in history from the Romans to the recent past when President Tito held Government meetings here. Take the small train ride past peaceful pathways where you can spot exotic wildlife and breathe in the wonderful sights and scenery. With over 3,000 years of history, ancient Pula is home to the sixth largest Roman amphitheatre in the world and arguably the most beautiful and elegant. Half way up the Istrian Peninsula lies Porec, another charming historic town and Tourist haven with a lovely coastline to explore. And dont miss the chance to follow in the footsteps of Jules Verne by visiting the delightful Old Town of Rovinj with its 13th Century Chapel of Holy Trinity. Average daily maximum temperature Local specialities include risotto, prosciutto ham, fresh asparagus with scrambled eggs and fennel soup. On the coast, seafoods the big attraction so try the scampi, prstaci (shellfish) and Dalmatian Brodet, a scrummy stew made with mixed fish and served with rice. Wine wise, go for the Istrian wines Malvasia and Teran. Croatians are also crazy about cevapcic sausage-shaped meatballs (surely a contradiction there?) Try some. They look a bit weird but taste fantastic. Other delicacies include Burek, a layered pie made with meat or cheese, and Piroska, a sort of cheese doughnut. What to see Pack your camera! Croatia has eight stunning national parks, mostly dotted along the Adriatic coast. It also boasts no less than six UNESCO world heritage sites, including the Euphrasian Basilica in the centre of Porec, the cathedral of St James in Sibenik and the historic cities of Trogir and Dubrovnik.
