Sea-faring Portugal, home to legendary explorers Ferdinand Magellan and Vasco De Gama, has a rich history and beautiful beaches for you to discover.
An independent kingdom since 1143, Portugal established its frontiers in 1297 and is one of the oldest nations in Europe. Situated on the west side of the Iberian Peninsula, its Atlantic location led to a sea loving and sea faring nature. In 1415, the Portuguese set sail on an epic voyage that would make them the first to discover the ocean routes to India, Brazil, China and Japan, and at the same time found settlements on the east and west coasts of Africa. As a result, the Portuguese language is still one of the most widely spoken in the world. So during your stay find the time to do a little exploring of your own and uncover the unique heritage of this striking country.
