What to eat
Portuguese restaurant meals often begin with the arrival, without asking, of couvert, a selection of bread, butter, olives and paté. But be warned: couvert may be delicious but it is not free. If you don't want to pay, just politely send it back. Delicious rice, potatoes, bread, meat, seafood, and fish dishes are the Portuguese staples, with cod being a particular favourite. In fact, legend has it theyve invented a different way of cooking it for each day of the year! Of course, youll never be far from succulent sardines sizzling on a barbecue either. If you fancy something less fishy, go for the hearty meaty stews like Feijoada or Cozido à Portuguesa. They have a bit of a sweet tooth too so give in to temptation and try some of the naughty but nice pastries, desserts and cakes like Pastéis de Nata and Ovos-Moles. From the ever popular Vinho Verde to sweet Madeira and an indulgent glass of port, whatever you choose to eat, youll have no problem finding a great local wine to accompany your meal.
What to see
For a real flavour of traditional Portugal, head for former capital city of Lagos. One of the most ancient settlements in the Algarve, its close to our Turiscampo parc, which is open all year round. Visit the beautiful Igreja de Santo Antonio church, decorated with lavish baroque carving and gilded woodwork. Wander around the labyrinthine heart of old Lagos and sample the local seafood. Then spend a few hours in the bustling markets and vibrant shops that line the cobbled streets. For even more inspiration visit thomsonalfresco.co.uk
