Your first stop is in Turkey, at a place once loved by Queen Cleopatra. Alanya's 13th-century fortress has got more than enough to satisfy the history buff - think chapels, mosques, the works. But not far away you'll find Perge and Aspendos whose ruins are unmissable. Leaving Turkey behind, you've got a day at sea to relax before Egypt. In Alexandria the beach scene is backed up with an exhaustive list of sights. See the Quait Bey Fort, which sits in the space once occupied by the Lighthouse of Pharos, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Or head for El Alamein, whose desert sands witnessed one of the most important battles of World War II. Then it's time for Cairo. Nothing can prepare you for this noisy, smoky, spicy hub that hypnotises faster than a snakecharmer's flute. See the pyramids. Snap the Sphinx. And bargain your way round the Khan el-Kahlili souk. After that, you're off to the Holy Land. Ashdod and Haifa are your passport to places like Jerusalem and Nazareth. Stand on the spot where Jesus was crucified.
