TOP 3 THInGS To SEE & Do TABA All the attractions of the Red Sea Riviera without the crowds that's the beauty of Taba, where luxury hotels combine with spectacular scenery and great beaches. There's a kind of romance about Taba. With the Middle East on one side and Africa on the other, it feels like a focal point, and somewhere that's got to have played its part in history. In fact, it's never been much more than a stopover on the caravan route and a border crossing for travellers from Israel. But the reds and golds of the ancient Sinai mountains, the stunning blue waters of the Gulf of Aqaba and the desert landscapes of nearby Jordan immediately conjure up images of sheikhs, camel trains and veiled princesses. What's more, the illusion won't be shattered by rows of British pubs or fast food joints. Taba's bars, restaurants and discos are pretty much confined to the hotels, so you can enjoy the Egyptian sunsets just as Lawrence of Arabia would have done. Twenty kilometres south of Taba, meanwhile, you'll find Taba Heights, a purpose-built resort full of luxury hotels, casinos and a championship golf course. This place is within easy reach of some fantastic heritage sites, too, like the Lost City of Petra and the Pyramids of Giza. 1. Watersports Conditions in Taba are ideal for watersports. Here, you can negotiate tricky winds, hover in the skies, or manoeuvre the waves on a windsurf board. For something a bit different, try your hand at Hobie Cat sailing. These small catamarans can hold up to four people, and their slim shapes let you zip through the water at racing speeds. 2. Pharaoh's Island This small granite island lies just 250 metres off the coastline, around five kilometres or so south of Taba. Surrounded by a large coral reef, it's known throughout the region for its fantastic scuba diving and snorkelling. It's also got its own 12th-century fortress, the Salah el-Din, complete with spiralling towers, turrets and arched doorways. 3. Golf Taba Heights is a purpose-built resort heaving with award-winning golf courses. Among the best is the championship Taba Heights Golf Resort, which is set on the east coast of the Sinai Peninsula overlooking the majestic Sinai Mountains. Tee off here and you can look out over three countries, too the coastlines of Jordan, Israel and Saudi Arabia are really clear.
