Masai Mara
The Masai Mara is the most impressive of all Kenyas game reserves, especially when it plays host to the greatest wildebeest migration in the world between July and September. It is different to most other reserves too in that there are no roads: your driver is free to leave the mudtracks and drive right up to the animals - not much can prepare you for the unforgettable exhilaration as you pull up a few feet away from a lion or pair of cheetahs! Other animals you are likely to see include elephants, water buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, warthogs, hyena and several species of antelope; you may be even luckier and spot leopard or a rare black rhino. Aberdares
Considered a fairyland park by some, Aberdares is home to two spectacular waterfalls, three tree-lodges and a host of animals including primates, elephant and buffalo which visit the waterholes located by the lodges. Lions, leopards, hyenas and antelope can also be seen, and maybe even a black rhino. Safaris: Best of Kenya
Lake Nakuru & Lake Naivasha
Lake Nakuru is a shallow soda lake in the Rift Valley that is a seasonal home to thousands of flamingos, as well as over 50 species of mammal including both black and white rhino. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake with a completely different ecology to the soda lakes. It is home to hippos, but its the hundreds of species of waterbirds that is impressive. Samburu and Shaba
Kenya's North Eastern Province includes three national reserves: Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba. Here you can see animals unique to the region such as Grevys zebra and the reticulated giraffe, as well as lions and cheetahs, while leopards and crocodiles are often encouraged by bait to feed near lodges. The Ewaso Ngiro River attracts hippos, buffalos and antelope, and the scenic beauty of the fertile highlands contrasts magnificently with the burnt-red horizon. Safaris: Best of Kenya
Amboseli
Famous for its large herds of elephants, Amboseli has the additional charm that comes from being close to Mount Kilimanjaro. The lake that makes up large part of the park is dry more often than not, though its the marshy ground that attracts most animals, including hippos and buffalos, while on the open plains there are zebra, gazelles and wildebeest. This is a good place to look for cheetah, the forests attract giraffe and there is some amazing bird spotting particularly during the main migration period over the winter months. Shimba Hills
Its the atmospherethat makes a visit to Shimba Hills such a fulfilling experience: it may not have the numbers of large mammals found elsewhere, but it is so charming and is home to some of the rarer African species such as the sable antelope, as well as elephants, buffalos, warthogs and colobus monkeys. Taita Hills
This private wildlife sanctuary is perfect for watching herds of buffalo and prides of lions with one draw for the game being the saltlick, while the beauty of the hills and the variety of plants and birds will enchant you. Safaris: Simply Safari
Serengeti
Tanzanias most famous park, the sweeping plains of the Serengeti, encapsulate many peoples idea of Africa where vast herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles can be seen on their annual migration while lions, leopards and cheetahs prey on them. You may also spot elephants, giraffes, ostriches, jackals and hyenas, while hippos and crocodiles are found in the rivers and many species of primates can be seen in the forested areas. Tsavo National Park
Divided into east & west by the Mombasa/Nairobi highway, Tsavo is Kenyas largest national park. It lays claim to Kenyas largest population of elephants, as well as rhinos, lions, hippos and buffalo. Mzima Springs, with its under-water observation hide, is the focal point of Tsavo West, while Tsavo East has a dryer climate, meaning theres less long grass for animals to hide in.
