Beaches Arguably Mexico's most famous beach resort, Cancun is a beach-lover's sun-drenched dream. Of course, a common problem with beaches in hot countries is the burning hot sand - but that won't give you any grief here. The jaw-dropping stretch of beach is especially popular with scuba divers, thanks to its colourful reefs. Eating out Food is more than simple sustenance in Mexico - it's a way of life. It's an essential ingredient in the vibrant culture, through which friends and family come together over the dinner table. There are certain Mexican dishes that are served up everywhere, and you've simply got to give them a try. Kickstart your day with a real Mexican favourite, huevos rancheros. The early morning dish is a large helping of fried eggs smothered in spicy sauce and chilli, served on a tortilla. If you like your meals with plenty of kick, dinner time is no exception. A popular Mexican treat is the ubiquitous fajitas. You can also tuck into plates of fiery chilli con carne and quesadillas. Of course, your tastebuds may not appreciate these hot dishes, which is fine. Cancun and Playa del Carmen are full of eateries with a more western flavour. Shopping When it comes to shopping, you get the best of both worlds. The strong American influence offers plenty of malls that are jam-packed with the latest gear. The traditional side of the country, however, means you can get your hands on some local crafts. Playa del Carmen has got loads of souvenir shops and mini-markets, as well as art and craft shops dotted around the beach. Haggle for handmade gifts and trinkets, like ornaments, rugs and jewellery. Nightlife After a hard day's sunbathing, it's time to do what Mexico's famous for - party! As the sun sets, Cancun and Playa del Carmen explode into riot of neon lights and very late nights. World-class clubs, live salsa, jazz clubs - the choice is yours. The bustling bars, however, are always a great place to get your evening started. Whet your whistle with a few early drinks before hitting some of the hip and happening clubs. Of course, you may be after something a bit more traditional. And if that's the case, the rural areas have got plenty of cantinas that are proud centres of the community. If you're invited in by a local, you'll be showered with drinks and treated like a long lost friend.
