Porto do Mar literally means `gate of the sea' and this is indeed the first hotel on the Via Costeira from downtown Natal. If you're looking for peace and quiet in pretty surroundings, this hotel is ideal as it overlooks the Atlantic breakers that wash the soft golden sands. Simple bedrooms are clean and well-maintained and the pool area is great for topping up your tan. The mellow mood continues after sundown so you'll probably want to venture out in the evenings. Just a ten minute taxi ride away are the bars and restaurants of Ponta Negra, where you can enjoy an intimate meal and a couple of wind-down cocktails or a full-scale night on the tiles which stretches into the early hours - the choice is yours. This unpretentious property is close to the excitement but laid-back and relaxing enough not to wear you out - so you can dip in and out of the action whenever the feeling takes you.
