The Matheo Suites put you in holiday mode from the moment you arrive. Not only are they set in manicured gardens, but the surrounding scenery is something else. In one direction you've got mountainous countryside and in the other, sapphire seas. Malia, the island's club capital is an easy 15-minute walk away. And if neon isn't your thing, head in the opposite direction and you'll find a traditional Cretan village with sleepy bars and tavernas. The suites themselves look like something out of an interior design magazine. Everything is white - the walls, the bed linen, the furnishings and the floors. But bright touches give them a chic zip. If you don't lock yourself away in your suite for your entire stay, chill out around the hotel complex. Taking centre stage in the grounds is the pool, which is bordered by luxurious sunbeds and neat lawns. There's a whirlpool bath next to it, too. It sits under a pagoda and is lit up after-dark. You'll also find a restaurant serving international buffets and à la carte meals, which doubles up as a bar in the evenings.
