Thomson Destinations Corfu Town Location On the east coast of the island, 2km from the airport Transfer time 20 minutes If a town can be all things to everyone, Corfu Town comes very, very close. Colourful and buzzing, this charismatic capital's one of the Greek islands' best, simply because it has so many different faces. Enter the old town with its narrow streets of faded Venetian houses and you could be in Italy. Here, as well as countless jewellers and carpet shops, you'll find loads of stores plying Corfu's prized olive oil and sweet honey. You'll also find a host of landmarks, from the impressive St. Spyridon church to the eucalyptus-shaded Esplanade, with its park and cricket ground. Linger here at the Liston, an arcaded terrace of cafes, and watch the world go by over a cooling ginger beer. Nearby, you'll discover two imposing fortresses and some fascinating places to potter around. Corfu Dassia Location 4km north of Gouvia Transfer time 30 minutes Fun-loving beach holidays are what Dassia's all about. Situated a few miles north of Corfu Town, it's a popular, spread-out resort, whose focal point is an excellent shingle beach with to-die-for views. By day, the purpose of life here is to lounge in the sun, taking intermittent swims in the calm waters. When the midday heat approaches, retire to the shade cast by the leafy olive trees bordering the length of the beach. Armed with a coolbag of fresh bread, feta, tomatoes and some still-cold drinks, you'll have your own private picnicking spot. When you can work up some energy, take to a wooden jetty to plunge into the deep waters, or try your hand at the many watersports plied here. A hotspot for white-knuckle versions like parascending and waterskiing, Dassia offers something wet and wild. Acharavi Location On the northeast coast of Corfu Transfer time 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes If you're looking for a resort that sits halfway between big and boisterous and a restful backwater, Acharavi may well be it. Set on Corfu's north coast, it presents a family-friendly mix of attractions, from a seemingly never-ending beach, to a healthy supply of entertainment. Having mushroomed from the original old town with its winding alleyways, it's not a bustling spot with a series of taverna-and-shop-lined roads snaking to its beach. The sandy shores and clear, shallow waters have deservedly collected a Blue Flag - and since the beach shelves gently into the soft waves, it's an ideal playground for the little ones. When you get peckish, the tavernas and bars trailed along the seafront provide ample choices, serving everything from authentic British grub to delicious fresh fish. Gouvia/Kommeno Bay Location 9km north of Corfu Town Transfer time 20 minutes to 30 minutes If a holiday in Greece requires both a decent beach and good nightlife, then Gouvia fits the bill. Located on a bay about 9km north of Corfu Town, its proximity to the main town has made it very popular with day-trippers. It has a lively, energetic feel to it and excellent facilities. Gouvia has man-made pebble and shingle beaches, suitable for everybody. Bathing is very safe and the beachfront offers a huge variety of watersports, from paragliding to banana boats. Set in a beautiful, tranquil bay, Kommeno is the place to come for peace and relaxation and the chance to enjoy some of Corfu's most stunning scenery. The main attraction here is the beach - perfect for spending lazy days soaking up the sun. Kalami/Kassiopi Location 30km northeast of Corfu Town Transfer time 1 hour 15 minutes Kalami is a small and friendly village-based resort that makes the most of its unspoilt surroundings. With the Gulf of Corfu on its doorstep and a backdrop of olive and cypress trees, it is in one of the most scenic bays in Corfu. Located 6km southwest of Kassiopi, it's an idyllic escape with strong Greek influence, attracting couples and families wishing to kick back and soak up the sun. The charming town of Kassiopi is set in a pretty location. It is backed by Mount Pandokrator, which is strewn with flowers in the spring, and boasts a picture-postcard harbour flanked by shingle coves and pebbly beaches. Despite recent tourist development, it retains all the atmosphere of a picturesque fishing village.
