he Almond Tree Houses are two converted stables, transformed into joining houses. They're set in the rural hamlet of Vrouchas, a place surrounded by greenery and olive groves sweeping down to the sea. Neighbouring villages, Loumas and Skinias, are also close by. In fact, when it comes to location, it's a great retreat if you're after little more than back-to-basics for a few weeks. The Almond Tree Houses have been renovated in this traditional setting to make the most of the magnificent views. And the best place to take them in is from the balcony of the second house. What's more, there's the opportunity to make the most of not only the view, but also the openplan kitchen area shared by both houses for a spot of al fresco dining. But perhaps best of all, there's a shared pool in the lovely garden. Indoors, each house has kept its character. The rooms feature traditional-style furniture, while the wooden beamed ceilings and thick stone walls are excellent for keeping the inside temperature cool. The kitchen, meanwhile, has all you'll need to prepare meals. Alternatively, head into nearby Plaka and Elounda to sample typical Cretan food, in a variety of fish tavernas and traditional 'ouzeries'.
