Sharm El Sheikh TRANSFER TIME 20 minutes Sharm El Sheikh is drenched in hot, sunshine with average temperatures of 37 degrees in July and August. Once a sleepy fishing village, it now spreads between Nabq Bay in the north to Maya Bay in the south, ticking off Dahab in the process. Look one way and you'll see the Sinai Desert. Look the other, and you'll clock the Red Sea. With incredible coral reefs, shipwrecks and marine life, this is one of the world's blockbuster scuba spots. Sun, sea and sand top the order of business on Egypt's Red Sea Riviera. Thousands of kilometres of white sand keep some holidaymakers sunlongerbound for their whole trip. And the world-class coral reefs mean other visitors spend most of their time under water. Set on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, Sharm El Sheikh is the Red Sea Riviera's most popular resort. White sand beaches spread out for 60 kilometres along the coast, and the waters are full to the brim with marine life. Ras Umm Sid is one of the most accessible dive sites in the area. And the famous Ras Mohammed National Park is just 20 kilometres away. Sharm El Sheikh is also close to Egypt's nightlife capital, Na'ama Bay. Across the Gulf of Suez, Hurghada's hot on Sharm's heels in terms of popularity. It's got 20 kilometres of beaches, and a nightlife scene that combines lantern-lit shisha bars with big-name nightclubs. Elsewhere, Taba and Marsa Alam take a low-key approach to the beach break. Their swathes of sand are among the most unspoilt in Egypt, and evening entertainment revolves around sunsets rather than disco balls. Finally, the Red Sea Riviera puts some of the world's greatest historical sites at your fingertips. The Sphinx, the pyramids and The Valley of the Kings are all within day-trip distance when you stay here. Beaches The Red Sea has some of the finest diving and snorkelling in the world. The warm, tranquil waters and coral reefs shimmer with marine life and colourful plants, create a magical underwater Eden. The most popular dive sites, with wrecks and sheer drops, are Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Alam. But more experienced divers might prefer the comparatively unexplored waters of Taba or Makadi Bay. In these quieter areas you might even be able to spot turtles or reef sharks. Back on dry land, white sands stretch as far as the eye can see. Dotted with sunbeds, parasols and palm trees you'll always be able to find a shady spot away from the sun. On the edge of the beaches, cosy beach cafés mingle with hotel restaurants, so whether you want a leisurely lunch or a quick snack, you'll find something to whet your appetite. Marsa Alam TRANSFER TIME 30 minutes from Marsa Alam airport Growing fast as a major resort, Marsa Alam is a long section of virtually unspoilt coast stretching from El Quseir in the north to the small fishing village of Marsa Alam in the south. Up and down the coastline, with its bountiful reefs, luxury hotels are clustered around the beach, like at Coraya Bay. No trip here would be complete without donning a snorkel or wetsuit. Coral reefs bask in the shallows, with a feast of marine life. Taba TRANSFER TIME 50 minutes from Taba airport With the Middle East on one side and Africa on the other, Taba feels like a focal point. The Sinai mountains, the Gulf of Aqaba and the desert landscapes of Jordan immediately conjure up images of sheikhs, camel trains and veiled princesses. What's more, Taba's bars, restaurants and discos are pretty much confined to the hotels. Twenty kilometres south is Taba Heights, a purpose-built resort full of hotels, casinos and a golf course.
