"With Blue Flag beaches, a huge choice of resorts, and a timeline jammed with momentous events, Turkey subscribes to the `more is merrier' school of thought."

If you want it all, Turkey's the place to go. Beaches, history, shopping, nightlife, food and architecture - the country's tourism collection is as far from capsule as they come. The majority of visitors make a beeline for the southwest coast, where the basic ingredient of any holiday is the beach. You'll find one of the country's most famous stretches of sand - the Blue Lagoon - in Olu Deniz, in the Dalaman region. Head east, and you'll come to Antalya. Known as the Turkish Riviera, it's one of Turkey's more cosmopolitan costal areas. The swathes of sand here come with a side-order of restaurants, museums and bars. Go west, meanwhile, and you'll reach Bodrum, where the beaches come in all shapes and sizes. They range from the Blue Flag stretch in Bitez to the watersports hub in Gumbet. From these starting points, the rest of the Turkey's attractions are yours for the taking. One of the most popular daytrips is a visit to the ruins of Ephesus, which easily square up to many of Rome's ancient sites. The hot springs at Pamukkale and mud baths at Dalyan also pull in the crowds. Beaches Turkey's beaches are something of a sensation. Hundreds of unspoilt swathes garnish the shores here, many of which barely see a soul. From blonde bombshells to angelwhite coves, there are plenty of postcard-worthy stretches to choose from. Topping the bill has to be Olu Deniz. Mother Nature definitely did some of her finest work here. The pebbly shoreline melts into a dreamy turquoise lagoon, so it's no wonder this place has been photographed a million times over. Not to be outdone, the Antalya region's golden sands and sparkling seas can't help but grab your attention. Side's a firm favourite, too, which is no surprise when you clap eyes on its ten-kilometrelong coastline. All that eye-candy means it can get a tad busy, though, so sneak off to the more secluded Sorgun or Kumboy beaches if you fancy a bit more privacy. Or, make a beeline for Bodrum. The younger crowds here tend to flock to Gümbet's sands, with loads of watersports on offer, although Tusan and Ladies Beach are also popular pickings. Last but by no means least, Altinkum is another place where you can't put a foot wrong. The shores here are wide enough to land a jumbo jet, so they're particularly great for kids to run about on. Decisions, decisions...

Shopping Shopping's an above average pleasure in Turkey. A land crammed full with many weird and wonderful buys, resisting getting your wallet out is nigh on impossible. Wander past hundreds of hole-in-the-wall stalls and the friendly locals can't help giving you the hard sell. It doesn't help that they often ply you with cups of tea and warm humour. Give up and point your credit card in the direction of Bodrum, where you'll find plenty of treats for your flexible friend. The colourful bazaar here is jam-packed with the gorgeous handiwork that Turkey's famous for. Will you go for some `kahya' porcelain with its dazzling swirling patterns? Or will it be a hand-woven woollen carpet? Unfortunately, they're not the flying kind, but with their intricate patterns and rich reds and earthy browns, they're the ultimate Turkish souvenir. You'll also find plenty gold and silver jewellery, leather goods and decorative hookah pipes. And don't forget to take a taste of Turkey home by buying some of the wonderfully fragrant spices. When it comes to paying, don't forget to haggle with the store holder - you can usually get a sizeable discount. If you're after something a bit flashier, head for Netsel Marina in Marmaris. The designer shops here boast the trendiest labels and hottest designs, usually at a cheaper price than back home.
