TOP 3
ThIngS TO See & DO
1. Fogo
The island of Fogo is definitely the head-turner. It's actually a giant volcano, which, at its highest point, rises nearly 10,000 feet above sea level. needless to say, the views from the top are pretty spectacular. If you haven't got time to make the ascent, head to the coast and face inland to see the volcano's silhouette in all its glory.
CAPe VerDe
A blend of African, Brazilian and Portuguese cultures, Cape Verde has been dubbed the African Caribbean. And with its out-of-thisworld beaches, it's quickly making its mark on the map.
2. Santiago
Cape Verde's biggest island has got plenty in the way of history. Captain Cook and Sir Francis Drake both docked here on their voyages of discovery, and the old capital Cidade Velha was raided by pirates back in the 18th century. Today, you can see artefacts saved from sunken ships at the island's national Maritime Museum.
3. Sao nicolau
Deep valleys, tropical plantations, and dramatic black-sand beaches that's the breathtaking island of Sao nicolau. Wander around the capital, ribeira Brava. It's a peeling colonial town filled with cobbled alleys and little shops and restaurants. The mountains here have got some great hiking routes, too.
One of the most popular is Sal, which is known for its striking lunar-like landscape. It's also dotted with rainbow-coloured towns, like Santa Maria, whose cobbled streets hug the island's southern shores. Over on Boa Vista which translates as `beautiful view' it's all about the beaches, which rival those you'd find in the Caribbean. Praia Chave deserves a special mention, thanks to its snow-white sands and shape-shifting dunes. Whichever island you opt for, expect a melting pot of cultures. Cape Verde was originally discovered by the Portuguese, so there's a mixture of African, Brazilian and Portuguese influences. You'll see it in the islands' music, fashion and perhaps most clearly the food.
T
he local motto 'Cape Verde, no stress' certainly rings true on this group of islands off the coast of West Africa. There are ten tranquil isles in total, all scattered across the Atlantic like loose change.
