Thomson Destinations Fuengirola Location 25km west of Malaga Transfer time About 1 hour Fuengirola's main attraction is its five miles of Blue Flag beaches, stretching either side of the marina. Generally Fuengirola caters for those who want sunshine and watersports, rather than heaps of local history and culture. But there are a few sights to see, like the Moorish Castillo de Sohail. And for a family outing there's always the Fuengirola zoo. Shopping-wise, Fuengirola keeps most bargain hunters busy. And on Tuesdays you can browse the street market on the Avenida Jesus Santos Rien. Fuengirola's nightlife is low key compared to Torremolinos, although there are plenty of lively bars. The restaurants here serve everything from traditional Spanish to English. And late night horse racing takes place at the Hipodromo del Costa del Sol near Mijas every Saturday in summer. Costa del Sol Torrox/Nerja Location Approx 50km east of Malaga Transfer time 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes To say that Torrox is all about the beach would be an understatement. In this modern resort between Malaga and Nerja, there's really one purpose in life - to snooze the hours away on one big beach. But when you've had enough tanning time, have a wander round the shops, stores and boutiques - you're spoilt for choice here. Over in nearby Nerja, a touch of true Andalucia awaits you. Unlike much of this tourist-focused coast, it retains every scrap of its Spanish charm. Perched on cliffs and backed by the dusky Sierra Almijara mountains, it feels distinctly home-grown. Take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the whitewashed old quarter. Enjoy a stroll down Balcon de Europa, the palmstudded promenade. And save some time for Playa de Burriana, Nerja's fun-loving beach. ² Torrox Benalmadena Location 17km west of Malaga Transfer time About 1 hour Butting up against Torremolinos, life in lively Benalmadena revolves around its massive marina. Packed with million dollar yachts and sleek speedboats, this harbour is also the hub of the resort's social scene. It's lined with bars, restaurants and nightspots. Historywise, there are a few Moorish watchtowers and the Castle del Bil-Bil on the promenade. There's an interesting archaeological museum too. But that's where Benalmadena's links with the past end. This is very much a modern spot where chill out beach days rub shoulders with cosmopolitan nights and plenty of disco glitter. For a taste of traditional Andalucia, head up to Benalmadena Pueblo. A pretty white-washed village that's home to the Garden of Eagles' falconry centre, in a building straight out of a Gothic horror movie. Torremolinos Location 11.5km west of Malaga Transfer time 20 to 45 minutes. The biggest tourist resort on Spain's blinding Costa del Sol, Torremolinos is a big hit with British tourists - and it has been for decades. If you're out for a classic beach holiday, it's very hard to beat. Its main attribute is its seven-kilometre swathe of sand, crammed with almost every entertainment you can think of. When the shopping bug grabs you, the traffic-free Calle San Miguel, with its gift shops and boutiques, should do the trick. Or perhaps a mosey around the market in the old district, El Calvario, every Thursday. Then there are the countless restaurants, from fast food to Spanish fare in the pretty Carihuela area. When evening falls, the nightclubs and bars spell long nights of partying. But there are still plenty of places made for sitting under the stars sharing sangria with new friends.
