Acoteias/Olhos d'Agua

Location 22km west of Faro Transfer time 35 to 50 minutes Centred on a massive marina, Vilamoura is the largest, purpose-built holiday resort in the Algarve. And it's got all your holiday needs covered - from sailing and bowling to shopping and having a flutter in the casino, your wish is Vilamoura's command. There's superb golf, with four 18 hole championship courses. At least 50 tennis courts. And a whole host of other ways to entertain yourself. Two vast sandy beaches stretch out from the marina - you'll have no trouble finding a sunbathing spot. Shopping is a pleasure here, with boutiques around the marina and souvenir shops around every corner. As you would expect in such a large resort, there's an abundance of restaurants too. And at the end of the day, make the most of the nightlife. Bars, clubs and late night cafés flicker into life around the harbour and all over town. This is the life.
Alvor/Praia da Rocha
Location About 20km east of Lagos Transfer time 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes Alvor is a quaint, old port at the mouth of the Rio Alvor. It boasts stunning views across a natural lagoon and the Atlantic, and is a haven for wildlife. Alvor is an interesting association of old and new, traditional and modern, epitomised by its beautiful waterside promenade. Cobbled streets and cottages sit next to bars and restaurants in a happy, sun-kissed marriage. This resort appeals to both families and couples alike. Praia da Rocha was one of the first tourist developments in the Algarve and is now the second biggest resort. It has everything you could possibly want from your holiday, and more. Attractions include an abundance of sporting activities, and there's also a waterpark and a golf course nearby. Facilities in the resort itself are numerous - your holiday needs - from food to fun - will be met here.

Lagos
Location 17km west of Portimao Transfer time 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes At one time the medieval walls of Lagos were there to repel Moorish invaders. Today they seem to shut out the entire modern world. Wander the cobbled streets of the old town and you'll feel like you're in a time warp. It's a world away from the resorts further down the coast. On the other side of the walls Lagos does have its own laid-back beach life around the stretch of sand known as Meia Praia. Here you'll find watersports as well as bars, cafés and restaurants. If sightseeing is more your thing, the old town is definitely the place to be. As for shopping, there are plenty of places to pick up an interesting souvenir or two, as well as a bustling market on the first Saturday of each month. In the evening, life revolves around the Praca Gil Eanes, a busy square with a huge statue of military adventurer Dom Sebastiao at its centre.
