Beaches Fuerteventura's beaches are the island's star attraction. If you like wild, windswept stretches of sand and a rugged, rocky coastline, the northwest coast will float your boat. This is where the surfers gather, attracted by some of the best conditions to be found outside Hawaii. One of the most unspoilt beaches is at El Cotillo, a former fishing village which, despite becoming an increasingly popular holiday resort, retains much of its traditional charm and character. However, for sheer eye-popping beauty it has to be the south of the island, where you'll find beaches that are so good they could

even put some Caribbean ones in the shade. One of the best, and therefore most popular, is Playa de Mattoral, which stretches north from Morro Jable on the Jandia Peninsula. It's a prince among beaches, with miles of soft, golden sand and gently shelving waters that are just perfect for safe, family swimming. It's also got a good watersports centre and a long prom lined with bars and restaurants. A few miles to the north is the number one windsurfing spot on the peninsula, Playa de Sotavento, actually a series of lovely white-sand beaches stretching around 15 miles along the coast. Every July it hosts a leg of the Windsurfing World Championships.

Corralejo
Location Approximately 36km from Fuerteventura airport Transfer time About 30 to 50 minutes Sun, sea, sand - they're here by the bucket load. On the northern tip of Fuerteventura, Corralejo is the island's biggest resort. Once a tiny fishing village, the resort still retains the air of the small port it once was. Surrounded by tasteful modern buildings, the original square is still the main hub of activity, although the main drag, with its medley of beach and gift shops, competes hard. Staying in town is a genuine option thanks to the delightful central beach. Whether you're holidaying with kids or not, its soft, clean sands are lapped by sheltered, emerald-green waters, perfect for splashing around in. And behind the sands, a huddle of amiable restaurants and bars offer welcome refreshment when the heat gets too much.
Jandia
Location 27km south of Costa Calma Transfer time About 1 hour to 1 hour 45 minutes Love the idea of a beach that you can't find the end of? C'mon in. Perched on the south east corner of Fuerteventura with an awe-inspiring beach running to the north, Jandia is joy incarnate for everyone who loves feeling the sand beneath their toes. It's true this modern resort wouldn't win many awards for its traditional Spanish charm. But it's got what you need by way of restaurants, shops and tapas bars along its beachfront and in its modern, whitewashed centre, so what more could you want? When you're spending every spare minute on a surreally beautiful beach, all you need is the holiday essentials. Even at night, when you drag your sand-baked body home, there's a nice line in vibrant music bars if you're up for some late-night socialising.
Costa Caleta
Location 7km from Fuerteventura airport Transfer time 15 minutes This is pure, concentrated 100% family holiday territory. With juicy bits added. Grab your buckets and spades - oh, and the kids - and you're all set for Costa Caleta. Sometimes known as Caleta de Fuste, this modern, purpose-built resort on the east coast is designed with tourists in mind, so you won't want for anything. Cupped around a dreamy crescent of pale sand and with a centre crammed with restaurants and shops, everything you need for a hassle-free holiday is on call. Mid-morning sees the daily pilgrimage to Caleta's pretty waterfront. Stroll along the palm-studded walkway to cherry-pick your place on the satiny sands and settle for the day, escorted into your daydreams by the sapphire-blue waters. In strolling mode? Then amble along the seafront to admire the picturesque 18th century watchtower and castle.
