Costa Teguise
Location 5km northeast from Arrecife Transfer time 15 to 30 minutes Costa Teguise may be a purpose-built holiday resort. But far from being a concrete jungle, it's a palm-filled oasis, tastefully re-creating the look and feel of a traditional Canaries town. The main attraction is the big, crescent-shaped bay, which splits into two large and two smaller sandy beaches. Windsurfers are attracted by the almost perfect boarding conditions - not to mention the many bars and cosmopolitan restaurants that line the promenade. Watersports and scuba diving top the activity list here, with horse riding a close second. There's also an 18-hole golf course just down the road, and next door to that Lanzarote's only water park, Aqua Lanza, with floods of fun for all ages. After dark, Costa Teguise doesn't exactly sizzle with nightlife. But there's a disco or two, plus plenty of lively bars in and around the Pueblo Marinero.
Lanzarote
Playa de los Pocillos
Location 5km from Arrecife Transfer time 15 to 30 minutes If a stretch of sand, the odd bar and a few restaurants are all it takes to create your perfect beach break, Playa de los Pocillos is just the ticket. It's neither a traditional fishing village or an action-packed mega-resort. What it's about is rest and relaxation. Beach-wise you've got a broad expanse of fine sand, gently shelving into clear waters. As for other daytime activities, it's mainly down to more watersports. If you fancy a day out, there are regular buses to the island's capital, Arrecife. In the evening, Playa de los Pocillos is not really the place for nightlife lovers. However, if you're not worried about dancing the night away and a good meal is the order of the day, there are a couple of good restaurants on the seafront. This place is all about the laid-back holiday life-style - so sit back, relax and go with the flow.
Puerto del Carmen
Location About 5km from Arrecife Transfer time 15 to 45 minutes Unchallenged holder of the title Lanzarote's liveliest resort', Puerto del Carmen has a great beach and is jam-packed with shops, restaurants and nightlife. At the same time, it's not lacking in charm. The old harbour's lined with restaurants and tapas bars, and has a cultural vibrancy that explodes each summer in colourful fiestas. Beach-wise, the fine sand, calm sea and friendly atmosphere make it a great place for young kids. Plus there are plenty of attractions for teenagers and grown ups, too. A two-mile shopping strip. A huge selection of eateries, from traditional Spanish to fast food. And enough bars to sink a battleship, let alone a few beers. For a generous helping of scenic splendour, head across the island to the Timanfaya National Park, or, for some sunbathing in splendid isolation, take a boat trip to the beaches of Papagayo.
Playa Blanca
Location 33km southwest from the capital Arrecife Transfer time 30 to 40 minutes Playa Blanca was once a small fishing port, and you can still get a feel for its former life in and around the picturesque harbour area. Yet, despite its traditional feel, the resort still has plenty of life, and everything you need for a relaxing beach holiday. And talking of beaches, there are three to choose from - the main beach in town and Playa Dorada or Playa Flamingo either side of the port. Apart from swimming and watersports, boat trips are Playa Blanca's forte on the activities front. And in the evening, the seafront fish restaurants beckon. The catch of the day will get your tastebuds tingling, particularly if accompanied by Lanzarote's famous papas arrugadas', topped with spicy mojo sauce. The nightlife scene here is delightfully low key, so end your evening with a nightcap at a laid-back music bar or one of the live shows at the hotels.
