TOP 3 THINGS To See & Do SKIATHoS Crowd-free beaches, fabulous weather and scenery worthy of the big screen it's easy to see why Hollywood came calling in Skiathos. 1. Monasteries Skiathos' countryside is studded with monasteries, but the jewel in its crown is the 18th-century Monastery of evangelistrias. IAnother one worth visiting is the abandoned 15th-century Monastery of Theotogou Kekhreas it's the oldest on the island. 2. Kastro Set on a rocky outcrop, this is the former fortified capital of the island. It was originally built in the 16th century to act as a refuge from pirates, and housed no less than 20 churches and 300 or so houses. Nowadays, there are just two churches left, as well as some crumbling ruins of the walls and the gate of the fort. M amma Mia really put Skiathos on the map. The Greek island lit up the silver screen in the smash-hit movie back in 2008. And, with its sandy bays, turquoise waters and sprawling olive groves, it's little wonder Hollywood's location scouts deemed it a worthy backdrop. Keen to follow in the footsteps of Colin Firth and co, holidaymakers have started to flock here, too. Most people head to the lively south coast for mile-after-mile of honey-hued sands. It's where you'll find resorts like Kolios, home to one of the best beaches on the island, and Troulos, whose sands are flanked by countryside. The leading lady in these parts, though, is Skiathos Town. The island's capital is traditional and trendy at the same time. Its designer boutiques and cocktail bars sit shoulder-toshoulder with whitewashed houses and tavernas so hidden under vines you'll blink and miss them. Last but not least, Skiathos is a great base for exploring the rest of Greece. Neighbouring Skopelos is only an hour's ferry ride away, and Athens can easily be reached by plane or boat. 3. House of papadiamantis This place pays tribute to Skiathos' most famous former resident Alexander papadiamantis. one of Greece's most celebrated authors, he wrote 170 short stories and several novellas, and his house has been turned into a museum.
