As one of the only hotels in Funchals old town, the Porto Santa Maria hits the location jackpot. Youve got shops and restaurants on the doorstep and plenty in the way of Funchals trademark 17th-century architecture on tap. Whats more, the hotel sits right on the waters edge, on one the few flat spots in this tiered city, and comes with a side order of harbour views. Pebbly Sao Tiago beach is next door, too. Not far away theres the cable car that runs up to the town of Monte, the Forte de Sao Tiago castle and the famous Lavradores market.
