New England has so many colourful byways that it would take several different holidays to really get to know them all. This tour, after a delightful introduction to the Boston area, moves away from the coast to the middle-western heartland to explore the spectacular Mohawk Trail, the Connecticut River valley and the fashionable Berkshires. In the leafy environs of Massachusetts we spend time in such classically lovely towns as Lenox, Stockbridge and Williamstown; and in Connecticut we enjoy the peerless Yale University campus. Next we drive through Vermont's Green Mountains to discover the pretty villages nestling there. Our holiday ends with an exciting two-night stay in Canada at Niagara Falls; and in conclusion we find time for a brief sampling of lively Toronto. 10 DAYS FROM £1375 Boston · Concord · Lexington Mohawk Trail · The Berkshires · Yale Newfane · Manchester · Lenox · Stockbridge Williamstown · Niagara Falls DAY 1 LONDON · BOSTON We begin with Titan's VIP Home Departure ServiceTM to London Heathrow Airport and your scheduled Virgin Atlantic or British Airways flight direct to Boston Logan Airport. On arrival our coach transfers us to our downtown hotel for the next two nights, the excellently positioned Hilton Boston Back Bay. Boston Skyline DAY 2 BOSTON This morning we have the opportunity to explore the many shops and attractions in this most British of American cities. After a chance for morning refreshment at Quincy Market we have arranged for a city tour that will allow for a detailed overview of the city, but will still allow plenty of time in the afternoon to make your own discoveries, and sample some of Boston's nightlife. Salem Cross Inn DAY 3 BOSTON · SPRINGFIELD Gingerbread House New England church This morning we visit Concord, site of the first battle between British Red Coats and American patriots in 1775, that led to the War of Independence. We continue to Lexington with its charming shops and lovely green where Paul Revere completed his legendary ride from Boston to warn the militia that the Red Coats were coming. We drive through Massachusetts to Old Brookfield and the Salem Cross Inn where we have arranged for lunch and a guided tour by the owner. The Inn dates back to the 1700's and is so named for the hex mark on the door to ward off witches. Coincidentally Salem is also the current owner's family name. This afternoon we continue to Springfield and the Clarion Hotel. DAY 4 SPRINGFIELD · BERKSHIRES 74 North to Greenfield, so named for its fertile valley, and the start of the Mohawk Trail, passing spectacularly through tiny mountain-top hamlets, sheer river gorges and dense forests. It follows an old Indian path along the banks of the Deerfield and Cold Rivers and sparkles in Spring and Fall foliage time. We stop at the beautiful colonial village of Williamstown, at the entrance to the Berkshires, the rolling hills providing a verdant setting for the 50 or so buildings of Williams College. Dating from the 18th century in the styles of the Georgian, Federal, Gothic and Greek Revival, they are disposed among campus lawns and along delightful Main Street. At Lenox we take time to fully enjoy this favoured resort with its many inviting inns and restaurants. This afternoon we visit the valley town of Tyringham, with its quaint Gingerbread House, then on to nearby Stockbridge, whose cultured grace has always endeared it to well-heeled Bostonians and New Yorkers and whose exquisite houses preside over well-manicured lawns and a wide main street that still manages to appear sleepy in the height of the tourist season. The Red Lion Inn and other buildings are a familiar sight to Americans who have never been here, as they have featured so often in the drawings and paintings of smalltown life by the popular artist-illustrator Norman Rockwell. His magazine covers and other work gave him the wealth to buy a magnificent 36-acre estate at Stockbridge, which is now the Rockwell Museum. Before leaving the Berkshires, we pass through Lee, a mill town that was to yield to a surprised farmer the rich marble deposit used in the construction of the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. In the late afternoon we take an attractive return route to the Springfield hotel. Halls of Ivy - Yale
