The mighty Mississippi and the wide Missouri Rivers gave birth to many delightful small towns and colourful cities and played an important role in the development of North America. From charming Saint Charles famous pioneers Lewis and Clark began their heroic journey of unchartered territory and it was in Independence that thousands of brave families left civilisation and ventured west in covered wagons into this promised land. Interwoven in this adventure story are the lives of Mark Twains Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, infamous bank robbers Jesse and Frank James, and the legendary Elvis Presley. Beginning with sophisticated Chicago and incorporating historic St Louis, Kansas City and Memphis through to charismatic New Orleans this diverse escorted tour is a treasure trove of colourful stories and magnificent sights.
ITINERARY - DAY 1 Depart Heathrow on scheduled American Airlines flight to Chicago. " Fully escorted throughout On arrival transfer to the Crowne Plaza Hotel " Visit the magnificent cities of Chicago, for a two-night stay. DAY 2 Optional morning St Louis, Kansas City, Natchez & tour of the city built around Lake Michigan. New Orleans Afternoon free to relax or explore. " Included Saint Charles tour, visits to DAY 3 Depart for Springfield and included Lincolns Museum & Library, Stonehill visit to the magnificent Lincolns Museum Winery with lunch & Oak Alley Plantation and Library. Continue to St Louis, Missouri, with lunch heralded as the Gateway to the West. Arrive " Learn about Americas heroes Lewis & Clark, Mark Twain, at the Drury Plaza Hotel Downtown for a oneJesse & Frank James & Elvis Presley night stay. DAY 4 Morning optional city tour to view the impressive Gateway Arch and the fascinating Museum of Westward Expansion. Continue to Saint Charles home to the famous frontiersmen Daniel Boone and from where pioneers Lewis and Clarke began their epic journey. Continue to Hannibal for an optional guided tour of Mark Twains house and other notable buildings along with the museum which contains original Norman Rockwell illustrations and exhibits. Stay for one-night at the Quality Inn & Suites. Evening free to relax or take an optional dinner cruise. DAY 5 Depart for the delightful town of Marceline, the boyhood home of Walt Disney for free time before continuing to St Joseph where the Pony Express began and the outlaw Jesse James was killed. Visit the Pony Express museum and Jesse James home. Arrive at Kansas City and the Marriott Hotel for a two-night stay. DAY 6 Full day optional tour to the farmhouse home of the notorious James brothers, Jesse and Frank. Return to Kansas City and the fabulous Arabia Steamboat Museum. The Arabia is considered the largest collection of pre-Civil War artefacts in the world. Evening free. DAY 7 Depart for Independence, former home of Americas 33rd president Harry Truman and the last point of civilisation when in the 1800s pioneers headed west in covered wagons on the Santa Fe, California and Oregon Trails. Continue to Hermann and the famous Stone Hill Winery, a mecca for US wine buffs, for an included lunch. From Hermann, it is on to the Mississippi river town of Cape Girardeau and the Drury Lodge for one-night. (L) DAY 8 Depart for Memphis, known as Home of the Blues, birthplace of Rock & Roll. Brief orientation tour of the city on arrival at the Holiday Inn Select for two nights. DAY 9 Optional tour of Elvis Presleys Graceland. Evening free to experience the nightlife of Beale Street. DAY 10 Depart for Tupelo and included visit to Elviss humble childhood home. The route today is along part of the idyllic Natchez Trace Parkway. Continue to Natchez and the Radisson Hotel for a one-night stay. DAY 11 Antebellum mansions is available for an optional. Continue on a scenic drive to the Sunshine Bridge and the country road that takes us alongside the river to Oak Alley Plantation. Splendid buffet lunch included before a tour of the plantation home. To New Orleans and the Park St. Charles Hotel for two nights within a short walk of the French Quarter. (L) DAY 12 Morning optional city tour. Afternoon free. DAY 13 Transfer to New Orleans Airport for scheduled flight to Heathrow via Chicago. DAY 14 Arrive UK. Alternatively extend your stay in New Orleans please call for details.
