Newfoundland and Nova Scotia are at the most northeastern edge of the North American continent, influenced by the sea and descendant from the English and Irish. It is a cultural experience so different from the rest of Canada and its people are famed for their friendliness. Yet the region can, in winter, be amongst the harshest. Our exciting tour encompasses the best of Canada's least visited provinces, taking you to places where each year they have as many visitors as Toronto can have in a weekend. The tour commences in Nova Scotia, with two nights in the maritime city of Halifax. Our itinerary includes a historical journey along The Viking Trail, a cruise in Iceberg Alley and a coastal voyage along the rocky shorelines before concluding with a stay in the provincial capital of St John's. 14 DAYS FROM £1745 Halifax · Sydney · Corner Brook · St Anthony Grand Falls · Gander · Clarenville · St John's DAY 1 LONDON · HALIFAX We begin with Titan's VIP Home Departure ServiceTM to London Heathrow Airport and your scheduled Air Canada flight direct to Halifax. We continue to Lunenburg, a town that was settled in 1753 and whose Old Town is now an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town's Fisheries of the Atlantic Museum houses an aquarium as well as many floors of exhibits and live demonstrations. We return to Halifax later today where the remainder of the day is free for you to explore. From Corner Brook we travel to the northern end of the province, via Gros Morne National Park and the Viking Trail. The varied geography and over 4000 years of human habitation has awarded the park the rare accolade of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also within the park is Tablelands, a barren ledge of rock over 80km in length that has been pushed up from deep beneath the ocean floor. It provides an unparalleled glimpse at the interior of the earth and at over 700 metres high can often retain its snowy cap all year. From Gros Morne we continue north along the Viking Trail, to our destination for the next two nights, St Anthony and the Haven Inn. Canada DAY 3 HALIFAX · SYDNEY DAY 7 ST ANTHONY · ICEBERG ALLEY · ST ANTHONY We depart Halifax for Pictou, the "birthplace of New Scotland". It was here in 1773 that the first Scottish settlers arrived in Nova Scotia on the ship Hector, a full scale replica of which can be explored in the Heritage Quay. We move on, stopping in Port Hawksbury to view the Canso Causeway at close range, before arriving in St Peters, on beautiful Cape Breton Island. Here, we explore the MacAskill Marine Print Museum and meet the MacIsaac Kiltmakers, where we enjoy an entertaining and informative demonstration of traditional kilt making. We then depart for Sydney and our overnight hotel, the Cambridge Suites. DAY 4 SYDNEY · CORNER BROOK We leave Nova Scotia behind as we join the ferry service to Newfoundland and our journey to Corner Brook. On arrival we transfer to our hotel for the next two nights, the Glynmill Inn. Corner Brook is the second largest city on the island and the hub of the West Coast, situated at the mouth of the Humber River between the Long Range Mountains and the open sea. Today we have included a unique boat tour that takes us out into the coastal waters off St Anthony Iceberg Alley. Not only does this area hold the largest concentration of icebergs in Newfoundland when in season but it is also the ideal location for whale observation, especially in July. After our cruise this afternoon we make the short journey north to L'Anse au Meadows. In traditional Newfoundland low key style this fascinating place is a 1000 year-old Viking settlement and with its waterside setting and unspoilt landscape it looks very much as it would have done when the Vikings first landed. You will have time to wander through original foundations, replica sod buildings and the interpretative centre. We return later this afternoon to St Anthony where there may be time for you to visit the Grenfell Mission, founded by Dr. Wilfred Grenfell to provide medical services and care to the isolated people of northern Newfoundland and Labrador. Newfoundland's rugged coastline DAY 8 ST. ANTHONY · ROCKY HARBOUR DAY 5 CORNER BROOK · HARBOUR ARM · CORNER BROOK 146 Captain Cook used Corner Brook as a base when he first charted this part of the Newfoundland coast in 1767. His work was so detailed that many of his charts can still be used by mariners today. On Crow Hill you will find the Captain James Cook Memorial Lookout, providing a panoramic view of Corner Brook and the Bay of Islands area. This morning we head out, following the twisting highway along Humber Arm that in many places had to be blasted out of solid rock. The road ends near Lark Harbour where we have time This morning we make the short journey to Port aux Choix National Historic Site. The one constant denominator for all of the communities that have lived along the Viking Trail, is their dependence on the sea. At Port aux Choix we will learn of the Maritime Archaic Dorset People who lived here long before the Europeans had arrived. There is also an archaeological dig in progress uncovering an actual village, bringing with it new insights and information about the area and its people. This afternoon we retrace our tracks along the Viking Trail to Rocky Harbour. Entering the town via the Cove Head Lighthouse we transfer to our hotel, the Ocean View Motel.
