DAY 2
CASABLANCA · RABAT
This morning we depart for an included guided city tour of Casablanca, made famous by the film of the same name although it was in fact all shot on location in Hollywood. As one of Morocco's principal cities and ports, Casablanca was modelled on the French town of Marseilles and with its wide boulevards, public parks and impressive Moorish buildings Casablanca's medina, or ancient quarter, should not be missed, nor should the modern Hassan II Mosque which is one of the largest in the world. We then depart for Rabat, the fourth of the Imperial cities, combining the elegance associated with a traditional and historical past with a more modern centre that you would expect from the nation's capital. The Romans created their southernmost colony in the area and during the 12th century, the then Sultan used the Kasbah, or citadel, as a base for the campaigns against the Spanish.
Local crafts in Fez
We leave Rabat this morning for the Imperial City of Meknes. Considered to be the creation of the Sultan Moulay Ismail, Meknes is famous for its 15 miles of protective walls and has largely remained untouched for centuries. We visit the Old Granaries and stables which are reputed to have housed up to 12,000 horses before continuing past the Holy City of Moulay Idriss, built entirely on two hills and fondly named "Sleeping Camel" due to its contours. For an insight into what Roman life would have been like in North Africa, we proceed to the dramatic Roman city of Volubilis. Set on a high plateau and visible from miles, and with excavations still taking place today, it is renowned for its well-preserved mosaic floors. This evening we arrive in Fez, a jewel of the Hispano-Arabic civilization and one of the best examples of a living medieval Arab city, and our hotel the Crowne Palace Hotel or the Merinides with its remarkable views of the city making an aperitif on the terrace a must. Dinner is included.
DAY 4
FEZ
This morning we commence our visit to the oldest Imperial City in Morocco, also believed to house the oldest university in the world with its theological college thought to date back to the year 1350. The day begins in the Medina Fez El Bali or Old Fez, bustling with artisans and merchants and with sounds, fragrances and colours sure to captivate you. Continue through the labyrinthine streets and through the Andalusian and the Karaoiune quarters, with its dyers and tanners, and watch the artisans working in the style of their forefathers. We return this evening to our hotel.
