The city of Beijing has been the residence of three major dynasties over the last millennium. The grid like arrangement of the city is set out according to feng shui principles, with the most notable landmarks lying on the north-south axis like pearls on a string and dominated by its centre piece, the Forbidden City and south of the Forbidden City is Tiananmen Square. The Summer Palace of Beijing, Yiheyuan, is considered to be the largest imperial garden in the world and a mixture of beautiful gardens, pavilions, temples and Kunming Lake, which covers more than ten square miles.
